The government should not be involved in helping people to die. That will end up with people being talked into it by "well meaning" government workers.

It's a slippery slope, as we see in Europe where disabled babies are put to death. If you want to die, go ahead and do it, just don't give the government the power to help you along.

Yes, Dr Luxford, “older Australians want to have access to high quality palliative care and to have as much control over their death as possible,” and reforms that will support people to prepare for a dignified death by “helping them to make choices”.

However, our politicians and PCA are yet to understand that a huge majority of Australians want the option of an assisted death to be included in those “choices”, when faced with a terminal or hopeless illness and suffering that cannot be relieved with even optimal palliative care.

Studies from Belgium, where assisted dying is allied with palliative care, indicate that generally people dying who request and are accepted for an assisted death, actually live longer and have a better end quality of life, than those who do not request assistance. The knowledge that if the suffering becomes too bad, they have this other option, apparently provides great emotional peace of mind.
